PARTIES HOLD ONTO SEATS IN FEDERAL BYELECTIONS

Three federal byelections yesterday did nothing to change the balance of power on Parliament Hill. The incumbent parties held onto their seats in each race.

In the riding of Durham, former air force pilot-turned corporate lawyer Erin O’Toole easily won the seat for the Conservatives, taking half the vote. The seat was vacated when Bev Oda resigned in July after a series of spending and expense controversies.

The Conservatives also held onto Calgary Centre, although it was a surprisingly close three-way race in a riding that has been solidly Conservative for four decades.

The NDP kept the BC riding of Victoria in a nail-biter with the Green Party that saw the lead change hands several times.
